I was lucky enough to have been invited to the Tim Flach Photography exhibition in Shoreditch on Friday. Having never heard of Tim before, I was astounded at the quality and clarity of the aesthetic in his work. The subject matter is entirely made up of animals in their purest frame of ideology, reaching an almost dream-like state where perfection and purity of image not only resonates within the soul of the viewer but also sheds new light on any preconceptions he or she might have had of the animal. The meticulous process is clearly a passion of the artist’s and we begin to see the interaction between the camera and the subject, giving incredible insight into the soul of each animal that is the very essence of it’s being. Speaking with Tim I could see that his intentions were grounded in a study of the animals, not dissimilar to that of a scientific explorer, whereby the interaction between the camera and the animals follows not only from Tim’s study of the animals but the shared journey between the animal and Tim in setting up each shot. The picture below surely demonstrates this point, where both Tim and the equine subject would have climbed the mountain together, and together witnessed the sun setting over the clouds.
The sheer refinement of quality and attention to detail is surely the most telling aspect of Tim’s work however, where images that super-seed the detail available to us with the naked eye reveal a whole other dimension to the natural world that surrounds us, if one considers the notion of scale as another dimension. In addition to this, the way in which these details are portrayed is so refreshingly natural and stunningly beautiful we must give credit to the artist. The third and final image I have chosen was a real favourite of mine and I was lucky enough to be in the presence of the artist when viewing it for the first time. It shows a collie sniffing out two pheasants who are spiralling up away from the camera. The incredibly dramatic lighting and skies give this photograph a surreal yet completely natural and earthly feel that really struck a chord with my perception of the countryside and nature. I later learnt from Tim that the collie infact belonged to the aristocratic Guinness family and this shot was taken on one of their estates in Ireland, which would certainly explain the bleak looking sky. I think that the inclusion of the environment here helps to bring out the truth in the scene, where the bounding collie is familiar with the heathland territory and the pheasants are within their natural habitat. Needless to say that it is a an absolutely astounding moment within a very beautiful environment, but one could also say that Tim is becoming part of this scene, yet instead of a shotgun he is shooting a camera, perhaps this, in my view, is possibly the secret to the success of this image, but also sums up the way in which Tim works, whereby he is not simply passive but becomes part of the life that bursts out of each photograph.
^^^UPDATED^^^ More elements added including the inspirational phrase “Surfing on a Rocket”, the earth’s atmosphere and Rob! I made it look a little like the Starwars posters by using the faded figure of Rob but this brings some familiarity to the print which is intended to be a poster. I compiled the two renders of my previous posts to create a poster for a friend with sparsely decorated walls. I hope he likes it! He is also abit of a science geek, like myself, so he will probably be analysing the possibility if such a mode of transport, he also likes racing so I guess this is right up his street.
Two Character turn-arounds from the forthcoming animation. This is the first stage of the pre-production process and will be referred back to when animating. It also helps to give more depth to the characters, making them more believable. Another way of doing this is to write a detailed biography for each character (to follow). Keep tuned for the storyboard and music track which I have decided to conduct myself using Ableton Live.
The Updated Love Football designs ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Made by integrating the geometric heart with the football itself. The first was intended to correlate the heart with surrounding pentagons but ended up looking too much like a stained glass window and not enough like a football. Look carefully at the first design though and an owl figure appears from the symmetry. The third and final design spawned from trying to find the simplest possible combination of shapes to form the football. If I am to work for Da Londra again I now know that the simplest possible design is preferred, but it is also a very good approach to T-shirt design generally, mainly due to printing constrictions. This character I designed to be a happy explorer of galaxies, travelling through many different layers of stars. This idea was mainly inspired by trains, the song by Air and possibly Astroboy (the hugely popular Japanese cartoon). Keep tuned in for the storyboard development and to see this guy animated! Animating vectors isn’t impossible but always abit finicky, therefore I am first going to experiment with hand drawn (light box) animating. The background will be a mixture of 3D, like the Earth you have seen and some after-effects. I will probably keyframe the character movements to get him to respond differently to different tempos for reactive sound but these will probably follow from the narrative I am hoping to develop in the following week. Essentially the story is about the character’s journey through space where he comes across alot of space-junk which comes to life through his imagination, where he uses the animated, newly found resources to overcome some hairy obstacles on his route. At the moment I don’t think the character is cute enough, I had envisaged him as being quite child-like and small rather than a super-hero. I guess that’s because children are seen as having the most wild imaginations compared to a super-hero, who can only really approach things from one angle, that is the angle they have developed or grown into. The song I was thinking to animate to seen as the animation will primarily be in corresspondance with the music. The background is central to the animation whereby each instrument will be represented by a different form/set of colours. Check out this brilliant but quite outrageous video produced by Jérémie Périn a fantastic young animator, but obviously quite messed up in the head!
^^^^Updated^^^^ A T-Shirt Design I am going to propose to Da Londra. The Magpies are Husband and wife. I want to add a top hat for the gentleman magpie and I have yet to place the branch they are standing on. I think that a hand drawn style might suit the subject better rather than the vectors I have used in this design.
Here is a quick sketch I made of More Place, right beside the new Shard building in London Bridge. The street has a small river running down the centre of it. I really loved this idea, conceived by Townshend Landscape Architects, and when I noticed Tower Bridge at the end of the street I knew that the bridge had to be the inspiration for the stream, as well as being inspiration for most of the architecture, whereby it is meant to compliment and enhance its surroundings aswell as providing a functional space. I am currently planning an event to be held on this street. Although ambitious, I think it would be a fantastic way of encouraging new and raw talent to the engineering community. Thats all I can say for the moment, but watch this space¬! The finished drawing will reveal all! Reference photograph: More Place, London Bridge
T-Shirt designs for Da-Londra. Really loving the new Illustrator CS6, finding the interface extremely intuitive and logical. Although having used the previous version of CS4 I guess it has not changed that much. The colours I have used here are not the official T-Shirt colours, which I am guessing will be something like fruit of the loom colours, but it definitely showed up some of the possible printing dangers that might occur i.e. clipping and spilling! Hopefully the bike in this instance should be simple and bold enough to avoid these problems, but if not I will definitely have to reconsider my approach to this one!
