Here is a screenshot of my first animated loop. Using stop-motion of a lamp and the filter effect used on the cells animation. When looped the lights appear to be orbiting the center. I rendered it out at 640×480, a relatively low resolution so that the VJing software can handle the workload.

Accidental happening, when using a kaleidoscope type effect on a sketch of cell form. By trying to distort the predominantly 2D image into one with perspective I found this psychedelic effect within after effects. I also accidentally managed to import a series of images I had taken at the Newquae aquarium as research for my underwater scene. Although, this was not quite the outcome I would have liked, I like the way that something unpredictable came out simply by playing around with various effects and parameters. Hopefully I will be able to post what I had originally visualised by the end of the week. This being a twisting and turning, growing cell structure, being tracked by the camera. I am currently working with Simon on creating a 3D structure, textured with cells, which the camera will negotiate, then I will apply a mask and other effects to give the illusion that the track is growing up.
Exeter Reactive Installation
Here are some photos of the Exeter festival taken earlier in the year. The installation was simply a projection of abstract form and colour that reacted to sounds made in the theatre. I was quite interested in how the audience became the aural aspect of the piece, and there were even music sessions held in the light of the piece during the week.
Light Waves
A mock up of the light wave pattern loop I want to refine further. The background was made using the raw footage taken from the video posted earlier in my blog. The graph layer I added in was an attempt to contrast with the flowing yet chaotic light waves. This also gives an impression of quantifiable measures in the field of fluid dynamics. I also added in a graphic loop, which seems to correlate to the flow of the horizontal light sweep. This addition provides a foreground/focal point for the eye to follow.
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT:: Refine the shape of the central graphic, perhaps in the form of an oscilloscope, and attempt to recreate the flow of the background light using Maya. I have already had a play with some of the wave/ fluid tools, and they show a promising likeness to the real thing.
Spaceship Model
Highway to Xen
Here I have mocked up a few variations of the 3D environment I wanted in the style of the game ‘Wipeout’. The final animated version of these racing track renditions will be produced using Processing, a pixel based programming language. I am looking forward to getting to grips with this over the holidays and producing elements in the background that respond to the music. I am not sure whether this process will take into account the perspective of the graphic objects created.
Hall of Doors
Geometry Worlds
Three geometric designs, created as a development from last years ‘OrbitJam’ project design. I wanted to get a feeling of depth and space into the grid, as if you were inside a computer. The colours certainly give a sense of electronic , but the ‘Tron-like’ grid is something that isn’t really present in a computer, but simply gives us a way of rationalizing space in a 2D image. This use of computer generated perspective has become an association with 3D games and virtual reality ‘cyber-culture’. I really like the way that another image could be placed in this environment, contrasting with the perspective we see. The 3D space also reminds me of a 3D mapping lights show performed by Ollie Sorencen. By using actual 3D space, 3D mapping accentuates the edges of structures/objects to make a physical object seem almost virtual. The second varation on the images shows how patterns could be animated into the floor. This is also reference to the Nokia Tube dancefloor, which uses pressure pads aswell as lights under the floor to create an interactive lightshow. The third variation shows how the grid can be warped, distorting the space we see. This is mainly inspired by a game I have played called ‘Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved’. I really like the animated warping of the grid in this game, where it is effected by forces like gravity and explosions, giving a real sense of the energy produced by the spaceship and it’s guns.
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT:: Find ways of warping the grid, to play around with the sense of space and challenge the mind’s way of seeing 3D objects.
Light Water Refraction
Here is the starting point for my next piece of concept art. I want the harness the flowing opacity that is apparent in these light reflections, but perhaps with a more circular pattern of waves. I intend to eventually set the shot up myself so that the best effect can be obtained from this spectacular array of light.
